Nobel Peace Prize Winner
In 1859, Swiss businessman Henry Dunant witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy — 40,000 soldiers dead or wounded with almost no medical care. Horrified, he wrote "A Memory of Solferino" and proposed a radical idea: every nation should have a voluntary society to care for the wounded in wartime.
On February 9, 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in Geneva, Switzerland. The first Geneva Convention followed in 1864 — establishing the red cross emblem as a symbol of protection and neutrality.
Dunant received the first-ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. Today, the movement he sparked operates in every country on Earth, with 192 recognized National Societies.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement operates through three complementary components, each with a distinct mandate.

The liquid portion of blood carrying proteins and antibodies. Used for burn victims, shock treatment, and patients with clotting disorders. Can be stored frozen for up to one year.
Blood type determines who can safely receive whose blood. The Red Cross maintains databases of all blood types to ensure the right blood reaches the right patient.
O-Negative blood type
O-Negative red blood cells can be transfused to any patient, regardless of their blood type. This makes it the most critical blood type in emergencies when there's no time to determine a patient's blood type. Only ~7% of the population has O-Negative blood.
AB-Positive blood type
AB-Positive patients can receive red blood cells from any blood type. However, AB plasma can be given to all patients, making AB donors equally vital for plasma donation. Only ~3% of people are AB-Positive.
